About Toy Libraries
A toy library is a community-based resource, often run and staffed by volunteers, which enables families to borrow a wide selection of high-quality toys for a low or nominal fee.
Toy libraries in addition may provide play sessions or offer the opportunity to ‘stay and play’, ie try out toys on site at either a standalone or pop-up venue.
Why join a toy library?
There are numerous benefits of toy library membership, including:
- Families can save money, by borrowing toys that are quickly outgrown instead of buying them.
- Children have access to potentially hundreds of toys that they might not ordinarily have the chance to play with, due to financial or socio-economic circumstances.
- Children and parents discover new toy brands or types, or new ways to play with toys they are already familiar with; they can benefit too from the guidance of toy library staff and volunteers.
- Toy libraries support toy rotation, the basic premise of which is that children have less toys and therefore enjoy a greater quality of play. Less toys at home also means less clutter!

- Children learn to take care of toys and to share.
- Toy libraries are a win for the planet! The toy industry is the world’s most plastic-intensive: 90% of toys on the market are made from plastic, and once they reach the end of their natural lifecycle, most cannot be recycled.
